Questions

What people ask us

How often does a septic tank need pumping?

Most home tanks need pumping every three to five years. Answer first: it depends on tank size and how many people live in the house. A bigger household or a garbage disposal means more often. Know your tank. Ask a provider in our network to check sludge levels and set a schedule that fits your home.

What happens during septic tank pumping?

A provider parks a truck near the tank, opens the lids, and pulls out the liquid and sludge with a large hose. Then they look at the tank and its parts. The visit is usually short. Clear a path to the lids first. Ask for a written note of what they saw.

What are the warning signs of a septic problem?

Slow drains, gurgling pipes, and bad smells are common signs. So are soggy patches or very green grass over the drainfield. Sewage backing up in a tub or floor drain is serious. Stop using water and request an estimate. In a long wet season, soggy ground can also point to a tank or drainfield issue.

Will my homeowners insurance cover septic or sewer repairs?

Maybe, but often not. Some policies may cover sudden damage, while wear, neglect, and slow leaks are often excluded. Read your policy or ask your agent before work starts. Providers can often help document damage for a claim, such as with photos and a written report. Ask for that in writing.

Can I fix a septic problem myself?

Some jobs are safe for you. Spread out laundry loads, fix leaky faucets, and keep trucks and cars off the drainfield. Stop there. Opening a tank is dangerous because of toxic gas and deep, unstable lids. Pumping, drainfield repair, and sewer line work need pro equipment and skills. Call a provider instead.

What should never go down my drains?

Keep wipes, even ones sold as flushable, out of the toilet. Skip grease, coffee grounds, paint, solvents, and cat litter. Go easy on bleach and harsh cleaners. These clog pipes or harm the helpful bacteria in your tank. Only toilet paper and wastewater belong in the system. Tell guests the same.

How much does septic work typically cost?

Costs vary by job. In the U.S., pumping often runs a few hundred dollars, while repairs can reach into the thousands. A full drainfield replacement can cost much more. Tank size, access, and soil all matter. Ask for a written quote before work starts, and compare it to your own notes.

Do I need a pro for a backup or a sewer line problem?

Yes, in most cases. A backup means something is blocked or failing, and sewage is a health risk. Keep people and pets away, and limit water use. Providers have cameras and jetting tools to find the cause. Request a callback to check provider availability, or request an estimate. If you rely on a private water well, tell the provider; they can advise on checking water quality after any sewage release.
